Pandemin i tio år till

En man som borde veta, Ugur Sahin, menar att pandemin kommer att finnas med oss i tio år till. Varför just han? För att han är mannen bakom det vaccin vi sägs ska ta. Hans Rustad på Document.dk skriver:

Der har været flere dystre forudsigelser om covid-19. Vi er i en slags permanent undtagelsestilstand, at selv vaccinen ikke kan bedøves fuldstændigt. Nu kommer manden bag Pfizer og BioNTech-vaccinen, Ugur Sahin, med en forudsigelse, der ryster os til fundamentet: Pandemien kunne vare i ti år.

«The virus will stay with us for the next 10 years,» Sahin said during a Tuesday press conference, adding «We need to get used to the fact that there’ll be more outbreaks.»

Udtrykket “ophold hos os” betyder ikke permanente udbrud. Sahin mener, at vaccinen vil give en ny situation om sommeren, så næste vinter bliver mere normal. Men intet vil være helt som før, ifølge Sahin. Han bruger også udtrykket “en ny normal”.

«We need a new definition of normal,» he continued, suggesting that this doesn’t necessarily mean countries will have to go into perpetual lockdown – something which could stop «by the end of the summer.»

Sahin ved ikke, om det er nok, hvis 60 procent af verdens befolkning er vaccineret. Virussen vil muteres, og nye mere farlige sorter kan tænkes. Derefter skal vaccineprocenten være endnu højere. Hvad dette vil koste, kan man kun spekulere i.

“This winter, we will not have an impact on the infection numbers,” he said, “But we must have an impact so that next winter can be the new normal.”

Sahin also urged caution on whether 60-70% of the world’s population being vaccinated would be enough to prevent further outbreaks.

“If the virus becomes more efficient…we might need a higher uptake of the vaccine for life to return to normal.”
